What the Una?

Una Moof - Long Haired It took a long while, but I finally got to order myself an Una Moof, and a redheaded one at that (pictured, right)! Ginger dolls are usually the ones that captivate my heart. When I first came across these odd little Una creatures, that was exactly what I thought they were—odd. Their charm eventually grew on me, so I caved in and wanted to add one to my burgeoning weirdo doll collection. What makes them stand out to me are their all-knowing, enigmatic expressions (like Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa) and wonky eyes. Whenever I see an Una with a wonky eye, I giggle with delight.

For those who do not particularly care for dolls, you may possibly ask this question: What the hell is an Una Moof? Well, first off, I can tell you they are NOT Bratz! Here is an excerpt from their official website, Una Week, to explain a bit of why they have the charm that Bratz tend to lack:

They are unable to pass on the stories of the past. Hence una dont think about the past or the future very much. In a positive way, it can be said that una are simply living the moment to its full content – very zen like.

I can totally relate to their philosophy of “living in the moment,” except I tend to enjoy some things from the past like old Three’s Company episodes and 80’s New Wave. Anyway, these adorable fashion dolls have an interesting background. Una were created by Yukiyo Shoji as a result of her interest in 3D computer graphic design. After many tweaks to the Una image, Shoji sent out her images to have them manufactured into little dolls. The first prototypes did not prove satisfaction, so over the next few years, many other prototypes were created until they fulfilled Shoji’s vision. Una were officially released in 2003, counting FOUR years ago [Tokyo Cube].

Shoji’s hard work paid off because she created such wonderful, quirky dolls, although I have yet to see one in real life. For months, Una Week’s online shop has been sold out of dolls. Recently, they stocked up, and I put in my order last week; they go for 85 USD. I will be expecting mine within the next two to three weeks. The one I originally wanted was a Cuna Moof because of her wild hair, but she quickly sold out. :-( Once Cuna Moof is available, though, I will put in an order right away and add to my Ginger Moof family. :-D So for now, I will be twiddling my thumbs, waiting for the Una Moof I ordered to arrive. I have already picked out a name for her too! It is going to be Muriel.
